Can you make yarn from human hair? If so, how?

I just wanted to know if it's possible to make yarn from hair that you get from a hairbrush. If so, I really would like to know how.

Please let me know.

Thanx

I suppose you could, but why would you want to? That sounds kind of gross, just like using pet hair. YUCK!

uugh!!

Yes, but you would need to card it and spin it. It would take a lot of hair to make a yarn worth spinning though.

digital is correct - it would take a long time to collect enough to do anything with. Think how many ounces or grammes it takes to make a sweater. I've seen people spin dog and cat hair, but they have mixed it with sheep's fleece to use it. Traditionally, long hair was plaited and put into glass-fronted pendants or lockets.

For sure you can. It is already carded, just take the roll you remove from your hair brush and a drop spindle and start spinning fron the end of the rolag.

I would rather have hair that is cut and held in rubberband for this purpose. This way it can be spun from the cut end and not tangle as much.

My friend has a great skein of "human hair" yarn on display in his weavery. It is silver colored and has a very pretty shine to it. He spun it on his spinning wheel, then plied it back on itself.

Well, you could, the problem is that the hair in your brush is not going to be uniform in length, and, unlike wool, it's very slippery and would require either blending with wool or a high amount of twist, and it would take a long time to collect enough to spin much of anything. Then you have to contend with carding it and if there is any length to it at all more than 3 or 4 inches, you'll have to cut it more evenly short.

Can it be done? Sure, why not. Should it be done? No, not really, this is not collecting your cat or dog's fur to spin. Would I do it with my own or someone else's hair? Not on your life. Human hair is far more likely to be scratchy and itchy.
